>> welcome to "11 news sunday morning." i'm lisa robinson. >> and i'm jennifer franciotti. we begin with a look outside with meteorologist ava marie. now nice the snow has finally stopped. if you woke up and had no snow, are you lucky. but we have 4 inches in westminster. >> we just have snow flakes downtown, but now it is frozen overnight. let's look quickly at the heaviest amounts we saw. 9.5 inches out in western maryland, near frostburg. most points east of the city stayed dry. this is all a concern. the areas that saw the heavy snow, they froze overnight. black ice. 38 in downtown baltimore. 33 out at b.w.i.

the sun is back out. as we go through the day, that will help them out some. the winds will be out of the northwest. as we come up, we will be detailing what it will be like for trick-or-treaters in the evening. still likely to be cold. that coming up in the insta-weather plus forecast. >> we keep saying the same thing. it is not even halloween, but it looks like christmas in parts of maryland. >> well, snow-tober hasn't happened in 33 years. >> this is pretty disgusting. it is cold, wet, messy, and not a good day for your car to die. >> even though it is only the end of october, carroll county looked like a winter wonderland. most of the day, there was

enough heavy wet snow to blanket all of westminster. >> everywhere there is snow stuck all over the trees and the leaves. a lot of the roads have slush. so not fun to be out right now. forecasters predicted several inches of snow for the county, which was evident from the accumulation on this front. >> what are you going to do? >> slushy, wet. they are not icy yet. >> even though roads are slick due to precipitation, drivers did not have a hard time getting around. the constant presence of snow fall helps. folks here in carroll county

hope it is not a foreshadowing of what's to come. >> i hope it will stop for a while, at least until november, until thanksgiving. >> whether it was snow, rain or sleet at your house, we would love to see pictures. in westminster, carroll county, sheldon dutes, wbal-tv 11 news. >> several states in the northeast have declared states of emergency because of the early snowstorm. at least three deaths are being blamed on the unusual weather. some areas found more than a foot of snow, and more than two million customers lost electricity. here's moore moore. >> a halloween blizzard? not quite. but the late october snowstorm that blanketed most of the east coast is one to remember. new york city which hasn't seen mezzrabble snow fall in october since -- measurable snowfall in

october since 1952 received a lot of snow. for the most part, this premature weekend snowstorm was little more than an inconvenience. >> a white halloween? i don't think i have ever experienced one, honestly. >> fortunately there was enough time for the road crews to gear up and for everyone else to stock up on the essentials. >> it is the mad rush of people getting salt, potassium, and shovels. >> new england is no stranger to snow, but not before the leaves have fallen. >> it is much too early. i'm not ready. >> like it or not, a preview of winter. >> the snowstorm caused serious air travel problems in new

jersey. united said roughly three flights were canceled because of the storm. one runway was closed. some outbound and inbound flights continued, but some experienced delays of more than six hours. new jersey was declared a state of emergency as power was knocked out to many, including the governor's mansion. >> go to our web site at www.wbaltv.com and click on weather for more information. >> a liquor store robbery in perry hall on the 9600 block of bell air road at 12:15 saturday afternoon. the owner chased the suspect out of the store and fired a shot in the parking lot. it is unclear if the suspect was hit.

>> it is the deadliest attack on coalition forces since the war in afghanistan began. 17 americans were killed in kabul. it was one of three incidents this week. we have more from afghanistan. >> a volatile day in afghanistan with three different attacks in different parts of the country. a bomber was able to gill 14 -- kill 14 americans and three afghans. in a different attack down south, an afghan service member turned his weapon on to nato service members killing three australians as well as their afghan interpreter.

this comes days before the istanbul conference that's supposed to take place in turkey, talking about the future of afghanistan and its regional impact. the taliban trying to make sure that the regional community knows they are still in afghanistan and they are still fighting. nbc news, kabul. >> in a third attack yesterday in the eastern province, an afghan female suicide bomber. three people injured in that incident. >> americans return to logan international airport to be treated in the wounds they received fighting against muammar gaddafi. they were flown to the u.s. following a request to hillary clinton during her trip last week. >> good news for coffee lovers

>> good morning. we are coming down on our latest snowstorm in october. the rare and unprecedented snowstorm that brought snow across the northeast. still dropping snow from boston to maine. quickly exiting to the northeast, which means our skies are finally clearing out. that is at least what we will expect as we go throughout the day. how much snow did we get? it really depends on where you were. the western part of the state, anywhere from 9 to 12 inches of snow in counties out toward montgomery, even into areas like frostburg. in southern pennsylvania, york county got upwards of 12 inches of snow. along the 95 corridor, you were

lucky to see just a few snow flakes, or maybe unlucky, depending on how you look at t in carroll county anywhere from 2 to 6 inches. some areas got 8 inches of snow. that's what we're dealing with. it was a heavy, wet snow. we froze overnight. black ice a big concern in westminster and parkton. temperatures all below freezing. baltimore, the city, at 38 degrees. the skies are clear. that allowed temperatures to drop down overnight. that means the storm is finally heading out of the area. it is centered across the eastern tier of new england while we have high pressure building in. here's the next storm system we are talking about, and that may push into our area as early as tomorrow night. as for now, it will be a sunny day. unseasonably cold. temperatures below normal as we struggle to get in the upper 40's to 50 degrees. winds light but out of the

northwest. that will keep them feeling chilly. the next storm system starts to approach during the day tomorrow. we have a chance for rain tomorrow night. i think it is going to arrive after midnight tomorrow into tuesday morning. that is good news for trick-or-treaters as we are expecting mostly dry conditions for the trick-or-treating. it is going to be chilly. you may want to think about bundling the kids up and putting extra layers under the costumes so they can be scary and not ruin their costumes. the seven-day forecast. chilly into the evening hours for trick-or-treating. a storm system comes in monday night. we warm up monday to 60 degrees, and we may be tracking another chance for rain, not snow, by next friday. >> the u.n. population said the world is about to add its seventh billion person to the world. >> that is a lot of people. the strain is showing in lack of food and clean water.

the bicentennial celebration are visiting the naval academy which houses some important artifacts of the war. rob roblin has that story. >> next year is the bicentennial of the war of 1812. it is a war that brought fame to our new nation. >> i didn't know there were so many people interested in the war of 1812. i see a park ranger! >> today members of the 1812 bicentennial commission toured the naval museum. dr. scott ward is the president of the museum. he describes some of the artifacts on display. >> some people thought of the idea of using a sea anchor. they spliced together a mile-long length of line, attached it to the sea anchor,

and the men dropped it over. they got rid of everything but the rum. [laughter] ex-president john adams considered it our victory in that war to be -- considered our victory in the war to be crucial to the united states because it was the first war after the constitution of the united states was adopted. the question was, was the constitution going to be strong enough to hold this country together during war time. the answer from the war was yes. >> it gives us a chance to see people -- items from history we would not normally get to see. >> if you are interested in american history and the war of 1812, the naval academy museum is a great place to spend the afternoon. >> for the navy, it was a sense of professionalism, victory,

>> welcome back to "11 news sunday morning." thanks so much for joining us. >> let's take another look outside with ava. 34 degrees. i don't even like saying it. >> can you believe it? it seems it -- like for halloween we have gotten more of a trick than a treat. the storm system well out to sea for our area. you can still see snow falling now in maine. as for the rest of the mid-atlantic, the skies have cleared out. many areas are now sitting below the freezing markment as you look ot our temperatures now, you can see it is 33 at the

airport. colder as you head west of the city. big concern is any areas that had wet roads now, there are areas of ice that you have to worry about. it is still cold, mid 40's into the 60's throughout the afternoon. throughout the northwest, winds are light. they are still going to feel cold because they are coming in out of the north. we'll talk about how temperatures will shape up for the halloween holiday. that's coming up in the insta-weather plus forecast. >> the unseasonable snowstorm is being blamed in the deaths of three people today. >> brian thompson has more on one of the hardest hit areas of new jersey. >> this falling branch was repeated over and over again. watch as heavy snow sends it earthbound.

the driver of this car was lucky to escape with her life. look at the windshield. listen to her escape. >> someone woos watching over me. >> the tree fell on you while you were moving? >> yes. >> you got out by dralling through the -- crawling through the passenger door? >> yes. >> later d.p.w. went to work on this road as it was blocking queen ann, an important secondary road. this man was fearful of an overhead power line. this one was taken boun down by -- this one was taken down by fallen branches. homes assaulted by trees. then we found this stalled car being pushed by good samaritans, including an n.j. transit bus

driver. >> so you had to move that car? >> i have no choice. >> off he went, able to make a turn needed, thanks to queen ann road being closed. >> that was brian thompson reporting. areas north and west have been getting snow. areas to the south have been getting flooding. there has been flooding in southern new jersey. tidal flooding has swamped roads along the coast. some low-lying areas have been closed because of high tide. >> crazy weather pattern. >> still ahead, the fury over bank fees on debit cards. what you can do to fight back. >> and bobble heads of celebriti

>> whether you like the snow or not yet yesterday, it is exiting out of the area. you can see the snow still falling across the southern coast of maine. some of that is heavy at times. the storm did strengthen rapidly. it is almost like a nor'easter set-up which is rare to see this time of year. we had the combippings of the storm and the cold air. that's why we saw snow so early in the year. it is clearing out. skies are clearing out as we head across the state into the

morning hours. we'll look at how much snow we got across the area. we are really dependent on where you were. along the 95 corridor, not much more than a trace. i know in downtown, we saw the snowflakes that accumulated. 30.8 inches in hamstead. that shattered many records for this time of year. not only for how early it was but for how much snow we did accumulate. we had the wet snow yesterday, but it remained wet on the roadways. the temperatures dropped below freezing overnight. 28 in frederick. this is all concerns for black ice. the roads are still wet. they froze overnight, and we do have to worry about icy patches as we head into the morning. 38 in downtown baltimore and 34 in edgewood. skies are mostly clear. temperatures are still going to stay well below normal.

temperatures continue to feed in out of the northwest. we'll talk about our next storm system coming in by tomorrow night. nor now, high pressure in control. 40 as we head into the western mountains. 52 in ocean city. for the day, skies clear. temperatures drop down into the 20's and 30's tonight. freezing and frost could be a problem. let's talk about our next storm system. this could move in throughout the day monday. that's when we have chance for rain. trick-or-treaters, i expect it to be dry around trick or treat time, dropping into the 40's. end of the week it stays more mild, but a new storm system could come in with rain on friday.

>> well, the rare pre-halloween snow did not keep trick-or-treaters away from the white house. no costumes for the obamas. check out the kids. we're going to see them in just a second. they dressed up and the bags were full of goodies, dried fruit, and even a healthy orange. the kids are from local schools. >> i wonder what they thought about that orange? i know, the first lady is all about that. they say go bigger. think life-size bobble heads. >> how would you like to party with bill cosby and david letterman? a company run out of coral springs is making dreams a reality. a company that let's you take home the neck -- next best

morning's "honor rose report." >> get a group of middle school girls together, and you are bound to see the color pink. this month we are seeing it everywhere from the football field to here at hamstead hill academy. all in the name of breast cancer. this group of 37 girls make up the builder's club, and when they hold a fund raiser, people come. with all the proceeds going to breast cancer, today is a good day. >> i think it is very important to let people -- help people that get that disease because it is a bad disease. >> it feels nice to get to help people. every month we go to the nursing home. >> their help comes in many forms. the builder's club makes regular visits to a local nursing home. they volunteer their time at soup kitchens and raise lots of money for charity. their advisor, mary donaldson

did the same thing. she now helps them help others. >> i think it help helps build their character. they want to make a difference. i did it when i was there age in builder's club. they are incredible. >> which is why the builder's club of hamstead hill will be going to a ravens home game. >> i am excited. i haven't been to a ravens game before. i am really excited. i bet everybody else is excited, too. >> we get to go on the field. the kids are very, very excited. >> go ravens! >> congratulations to them for raising over $375 for breast cancer research. >> next up, more on the ravens game. >> looks like they will have a ball. they will have so much fun today. >> yeah, they are.

>> it is the deadliest attack on coalition forces since the war in afghanistan began. 14 americans were killed on saturday when a suicide bomber struck a nato convoy. it was one of the three most dangerous incidents to occur in afghanistan. >> a volatile saturday here in afghanistan with three very different attacks in different parts of the country. the biggest occurred here in the capital of kabul where a nato convoy was attacked hitting an up armored bus carrying u.s. service members. in the end it killed 13 americans, four afghans, three civilians and one afghan police officer. this is the biggest attack we have seen in the capital since mid september. in a different attack down south an afghan service member turns his weapon on to nato service

we had six areas in braddock heights. the further west you went, many areas got more than to 12 inches. along i-95, not much more than a trace. downtown no accumulation, but snow flakes did fall. baltimore city officially saw their first snowfall of the year. we have the cold air in place. areas that got the snow yesterday, the ground was wet as well. upper 40's in western maryland.

if you are heading to the game, bundle up. you know it has been cold. still going to be in the afternoon. mostly sunny skies. temperatures in the upper 40's. for kickoff, we started to drop down into the mid 40's toward the end of the game. better chance for rain sunday night. tuesday morning. we are expecting the rain to arrive after trick-or-treaters. temperatures only in the 40's. we expect mostly dry weather. more weather building into the sky. rain will arrive after midnight. chance for rain showers. back to 60 degrees on wednesday.

>> arguably we saw our first snowfall of the season. the last time we saw that happen was a decade ago. thankfully the storm system heading up the area. the northeast coast still affecting parts of southern maine. the snow is still on the ground and it is going to take a long time to actually melt as temperatures stay chilly. let's look at how much snow we got across the state. it depended on where you why how much you got along the i-95 corridor. not much more than a trace. they did see their first snow flake in the rain. the further wift went, it was heavy in nature, even from areas like montgomery all the way to

garrett county. we saw 6 to 12 inches of snow. heavy snowfall, especially for the month of october. heavy wet snow. the ground we froze, and that brings big concerns of black ice. as you head out this morning, be careful. if you see the road looksline shiny, there is concern there could be ice there. as you head out, 32 in gatesburg. 30 in westminster. a little milder right now in baltimore. above freezing at 34. annapolis at 38 degrees. a chilly start to the day. and because there is snow on the ground and we still have the winds out of the northwest, temperatures will stay cold. mostly sunny skies. we only get up into the upper 40's toward the afternoon. winds out of the northwest 5 to 10 miles per hour. through the night we will see a few clouds build in. temperatures plummet once again. upper 20's to low 30's. again a concern of refreezing.

it was 1-3 violent incidents across afghanistan this weekend. nbc's attia abawe is in super bowl kabul with more. >> a volatile saturday in afghanistan with three different atks in different parts of the country. one here in the capital of kabul where a car bomber hit an up -armored bus. in the end, the bomber was able to kill 13 americans and four afghans. three civilians and one afghan police officer. this is the biggest attack we have seen in the capital since mid september. in a different attack down south an afghan service member turned his weapon on to nato service members killing three australians as well as their afghan interpreter. this comes just days before the istanbul cannot frens is supposed to take place in turkey talking about the future of afghanistan and its regional

>> good morning. many of you waking up not only to cooler temperatures but snow on the ground. our snowstorm continues to track up the new england coastline where it is still snowing in maine. that storm system quickly exiting to the east. behind it, it left a big swath of snow in western maryland, southern pennsylvania as well. let's look at how much we got yesterday. very rare sight to see not only snow in october, but this much of it. there is only a trace below college park. further west and north you went, it really added up. around 7.8 inches yesterday in erdersberg. out toward the west where the heaviest snow well, frostburg 5.9 inches. the big concern, temperatures plummeted overnight.

we may start to talk about black ice as we head out into the morning. look at temperatures out there. 28 in frostburg. 29 in hagerstown. 28 in westminster. 35 at b.w. i. 39 degrees in the inner harbor. temperatures going to stay chilly today. not only do we have the snow on the ground which keeps the temperatures cold, we still have the winds in out of the northwest. we are only into the mid 40's to low 50's this afternoon with unseasonably cold weather for this time of year. the snow will start to melt, but it will have a hard time, especially in places where you got a half foot plus. a few clouds build back in. anything that melted throughout the day brings concern of black ice overnight. the roads look dry, but the ice is clear. that's a big concern, because you don't always see it until you are right on top of it. temperatures dropping into the low 30's to upper 20's again. we have our next storm system approaching throughout the day tomorrow. this will bring more clouds in the forecast tomorrow. i think the rain holds off until

late tomorrow night and into tuesday morning. good news for trick-or-treaters. shouldn't be a wet trick or treating event. you definitely want to -- upper 40's to drop off. mostly cloudy skies. the sun will be setting tomorrow night at 6:07 in the evening hours. seven-day forecast plays out like this. the temperatures do start to warm up into the mid week. up to 60 degrees wednesday. 63 on thursday. the next storm system comes back in by the end of next week. at least for now, no major temperature swings. looking forward to that. >> that's a relief. the u.n. population fund says the world is about to add its seventh billionth person on the planet come monday. >> that's a loot of people. the strain is showing in food and fuel and access to clean water. here's ann thompson with that story. >> the sound of joy from the

it caught me more concerned about this. >> just give us some information about how often this happened. >> 1-3 seniors falls in a given year. 2.2 million injuries, 18,000 deaths. it is the biggest cause of death. accidental death, more than car accidents among seniors. >> why is that? because of the complications involved? >> and because some of the falls are significant. a lot of head injuries. it is also the biggest cause of head injuries as well. >> let's talk about what families can do. >> four simple things. number one, leg exercises and things like tai chi which helps balance. >> secondly, have your vision checked regularly. at least once a year. a lot of people have vision changes and they can't see as well. then they will fall. third, have prescriptions checked by a physician. a lot of medications can make

you dizzy which leads to fall. fourth, check around your house. we can go to our parents' house, make sure there are not thengs piled up on the floors, the cords, et cetera, and the biggest thing in houses, make sure there is adequate lighting. i know we want to be green, but for senior develop tiffs, it makes sense to have good lighting. >> it is hurt. i can't do this. >> the more they move, the more skezzes they can do when they are sitting. >> absolutely. again, the best exercises are leg exercises and balance exercises. tai chi is simple many it is not particularly difficult to do. it is not hard on the body. it provides you with better balance to help prevent falls. >> eye exams and checking the medication is so very important. >> very important. f. >> there are so many different medications being offered. >> right. so you can take it to your

pharmacist, either the pharmacist at the giant or say here are the five medicines we are taking, do these make sense, are any of them likely to counteract each other. if so, talk to your doctor and get them changed. >> and we are going into the icy time of the year. >> everybody should be careful on a day like today. >> not waiting until you are a seen yorks but doing things now to strengthen bones and muscles is important. >> you can start at any time. i think we were talking before, a marathoner that ran a 3:15 marathon. which is a good time. at age 80. he started in his 70's. the better shape you are in, the better you will age. >> good stuff. thank you for come -- coming in. you took the soda pledge. >> the average person in america drinks 50 gallons of soda a year. that's 40% of your excess sugar. we took a 30-day pledge.

hopefully things will warm up. >> the winds are out of the northwest. so it is a chilly day. at least the snow is no longer falling from the sky. quite the sight to see yesterday. it surprised a lot of people. at least for now, the ayes are quiet. 35 at the airport. winds out of the northwest miles per hour. as we head through the day, the snow will have a hard time melting in the mountains. 44 in central maryland. keep in mind, as we're heading up to the ravens game, temperatures only around 46 for kickoff. up to 60 degrees at most in the middle half of the game. dress warm. we'll be detailing that in the insta-weather plus forecast coming up. >> time for a look at what's coming up on "meet the press.

"david gregory joins us with a live look. good morning. >> good morning. what are you hearing about the progress in this area and what needs to be done? >> i think you see the president is going a different route. he wants to do smaller measures that he can do by himself that doesn't require the approval of congress. it has republicans firing back at him this week. this is a larger argument that the president is making as he gets into election mode. this is, i'm trying, they're not. effectively, they have stopped governing at a time when the economy is in dire straits. >> herman cain is among the top g.o.p. contenders. he said don't count him out. what else did he have to say? >> one of the things he talked about is the extent to which race is a factor in his support. cummings making the case that a

lot of tea party supporters that have been accused of being racist in their attacks on president obama, you know, find some sol ace in herman cain who is certainly attacking president obama but is an african-american and in some way makes them feel we're not racist, we support him, we just support president obama's policies. that's a factor cummings thinks is there in his support as well. he certainly is driving up support. we see it in the polling out of iowa. we see it in those that will identify themselves as very conservative like his message and what he stands for. i should medges the cummings interview is part of our press pass conversation which you can find online. >> and the big news out of afghanistan, will you talk about that this morning on your show show? >> no question it is a huge setback and a sign of how dangerous kabul itself has become. kabul has become a place of much more security. it is, of course, head quarters

>> passengers spent more than seven hours stuck on a plane after their flight from florida to new jersey was diverted to connecticut. jet blue flight 504 ended up at the bradley ampte after stwazz divert ad way from newark because of the bad weather. passengers spent seven hours on the plane waiting to be allowed into the terminal. >> it almost came to fisticuffs on the plane. there were children under the age of 3 for eight hours on a plane is not pleasant. they are going to offer us, if we are lucky, a free flight somewhere. i'll never fly jet blue again and i'll never fly through connecticut again. >> ouch. officials said they did

everything comfortable and blame the delay on a mix of weather and infrastructure problems. the jetblue flight was one of 23 diverted through the airport saturday afternoon. >> now your forecast with meteorologist ava marie. >> hopefully traveling headaches are starting to ease up as our nor'easter heads out to sea. right now, still snowing quite heavily in bangor maine. it looks like flights will have a hard time catching up from cancellations and delays. at least the weather is started to head out. we have clear skies heading in across the mid-atlantic. eventually we'll be talking about our next storm system which you can see is now moving across the midwest. how much snow did we get? it definitely depended on where you were yesterday. it all depended on where temperatures were. anywhere it got close to the freezing mark, the snow was able to come down 7.8 inches in eldersberg.

only a trace of snow fell on the i-95 corridor. even the downtown area pau saw a few flakes but no accumulation. also into southern pennsylvania. now, the big concern with this, some of the roads were still wet yesterday. twaze heavy, wet snow. as temperatures got above the freezing mark yesterday afternoon, it did allow some snow to melt. however, overnight, as temperatures plummeted, it pre refroze. black ice. 8 degrees in frederick. anywhere it is below freezing right now. you have to worry about ice on the roadway and the sidewalks. also we have fog to worry about. western tier of maryland out toward oklahoma -- toward oakland and frossburg. thick fog. temperatures in the 30's.

ravens game is early, 1:00 p.m., but still chilly at the stadium. late tonight a few clouds roll in. more clouds tomorrow. our next storm system comes up the coast monday night into tuesday. this time not as cold of weather. we're talking mostly just rain. it comes after midnight tomorrow night. the trick-or-treaters look safe. they won't have to bring umbrellas out. they will have to bundle up. mostly cloudy skies. temperatures dropping into the 40's toward the end of trick-or-treating. frightful out there unless you are dressed warm. chance for rain lingering into tuesday morning. wednesday up to 60 with mostly is notty skies. 63 with sunshine. we turn cooler again into next friday. back to you general and lisa. >> a bookandahug.com is here.

burger. we took our famous recipe. some italian grandmothers do it on sunday. they take a little of the meatball mixture and fry it in the pan. once you have done all the ward work of rolling a meatball, it is too late to add the spice. the recipe will be on the web site today. almost two pounds. i will ask chris to add salt and white pepper. >> what do you like about veal? >> rather than a regular beefy bburge --burger, which i love, it has all the flavor. >> soy sauce. >> a little soy sauce to give it that beefy flavor that you love. some eggs. and you know, in many ways it is a standard meet ball recipe. a little milk. a little minced garlic. we get garlic glofse.

we puree them in a blender. they are pureed. use the italian flat-leaf parsley. you mix this all by hand, and everyone, i think, knows how to make a hamburger patty. we're cooking it at norm yam in a castiron pan. we have, you know, the magic of television, we have one already ready. >> what is the thing people do wrong most times when they are making meatballs. >> there is a debate as to whether you should use bread crumbs or a mixture of bread cubes, stale, and a little milk. for the novice, i recommend -- i was recently converted to that idea. if you don't notice how to make a meatball, grandmother didn't teach you, you have a little more room for error. >> you know how i mete make a meatball?
